List of Maritime Academies in Nigeria
Institutions called maritime academies are in charge of selecting and educating applicants for jobs in the merchant navy. Additionally, maritime schools educate workers in specific fields including hydrography, marine insurance, piloting, and navigation, among others.
The Nigerian Maritime Academy The Nautical College of Nigeria, which is now located in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, was first created in 1977 by Federal Executive Conclusion No. EC(77) 172 with support from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It was formed as a training facility under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Transport’s Research and Statistics Department. On October 6, 1979, it was deemed open for instruction. The academy was initially intended to serve as an integrated educational and training facility for shore-based administrative staff as well as shipboard officers and ratings.
When the Nautical College first opened, it consisted of three academic departments: nautical science, marine engineering, and general studies. The Nautical College of Nigeria’s status was upgraded, its mandate was expanded, and its name was changed to Maritime Academy of Nigeria by Decree No 16 of 1988 (now Cap M3 LFN 20) as a result of Nigeria’s adoption of the STCW 1978 Convention in 1986.
