National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) as the name implies is responsible for the protection and rehabilitation of trafficked people, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, addresses the rise of human trafficking in the country.

NAPTIP was established under a federal bill on July 14, 2003 by the Trafficking in Persons(Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act (2003).

NAPTIP has the obligation to supervise and look into cases linked with:

  • Kidnapping
  • Exploitive labor
  • Child labor
  • Prostitution
  • Removal of organs
  • Slavery
  • Smuggling of immigrants
  • Purchase and sale persons.

FUNCTIONS OF NAPTIP: 

1. They help right and enforce the human trafficking Law Enforcement and Administration Act

2. The organisations help the Government with several measures to prevent human trafficking.
3. They help supervise and investigate human trafficking

4. They help teach and encourage people to fight slavery in the country.

5. They help enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agents

6. They partner with the media to create public awareness

7. Partner with institutions to conduct research about slavery in Nigeria

8. They have the aim of reducing human trafficking

9. They help Protect victims and witnesses.
