Colin Aikman Scholarship Award

The Victoria University of Wellington is offering all nationals excluding New Zealand the opportunity to apply for the Colin Aikman Award for Bachelors, Masters, PhD degree in the field of Constitutional law, human rights, international law or other issues affecting the South Pacific.

The Award has been established in Colin Aikman’s memory to provide opportunities for students in the areas of constitutional law, human rights, international law or other legal issues affecting the South Pacific.

The Award was launched in November 2005 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. The Law Faculty generously provided a contribution of $10,000 to establish the fund.

Dr Colin Aikman was Professor of Jurisprudence and Constitutional Law at Victoria University from 1955 to 1968, and Dean of the Law Faculty for seven years. He then became the foundation Vice Chancellor at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji for six years.

As a constitutional lawyer and legal advisor to the Department of External Affairs, he was involved in the conferences leading to the establishment of the United Nations in 1945 and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

  • Nationality: All nationals (except New Zealand)

Field of Study:

  • or other issues affecting the South Pacific

Scholarship Award:

  • Up to $10,000


  • The candidates applying for Colin Aikman Award should intend to Law at Ph.D. or masters or undergraduate level at the University.
  • The applicants will be evaluated based on their academic merit.
  • The candidates should complete and submit the application form and information disclosure form by the specified deadline.
  • The applicants who have not completed their studies at the Victoria University of Wellington should submit a certified copy of their academic record.
  • The candidates should also submit a research outline or intended course of study in one page.
  • The recipients of Colin Aikman Award get $10,000 for one year.
  • The recipients should write a letter of thanks to the donor on receiving the award.

Closing Date for Applications: 30 Oct 2018

The Colin Aikman Scholarship Award will be made based on academic merit in accordance with the level of study of the applicant.

How to Apply

  • Providing all study has been completed at Victoria, a transcript will be attached to this application by the Scholarships Office.
  • Applicants for the Scholarship must: a brief (one page) outline of their research topic or intended course of study; Applicants other than those who have completed all their study at Victoria University of Wellington must attach certified copies of transcripts from other institutions
  • The application form must be submitted to Scholarships Manager, Scholarships Office, Victoria University of Wellington, PO Box 600, Wellington 6140, New Zealand.
